Moroccan designers explore the potential of Swedish pine

Sweden exports around 400,000 m3 sawn wood products, mostly pine, to Morocco each year. That accounts for approximately half of Morocco’s import of conifer wood, making Sweden a leading import country.

In Morocco, Swedish wood has long been used to manufacture joinery products such as furniture, kitchen units, windows and doors. A prime example is the Moroccan sofa, a built-in item of furniture that lines three walls and can be found in almost every home.

However, the Swedish pine tends to be used in the structural frame of the furniture, concealed from view in the finished item. In a drive to encourage Moroccan designers to embrace the beauty of the wood, Swedish Wood has therefore asked 10 designers to create furniture using Swedish wood products. Below are their personal thoughts and reflections on their projects.
