Chen Yanfei, an artist by training, has become well known for his traditional Chinese furniture. He crafts his furniture the old way, using the ancient joinery techniques of mortise and tenon – techniques that are often cited as an example of the brilliance of the ancients, as these do not require nails or glue. He is a firm believer that good furniture design must be simple, elegant and functional.

Furniture name
Wintersweet cabinet

Description
Chen Yanfei considers Swedish pine as an easy-to-process, flexible, stable and natural material. He made bold design of a multi-curved, wintersweet petal-shaped cabinet. It is an integral whole object regardless of direction. Drawers which are
almost invisible when closed “grow” randomly from the cabinet. In facade, the cabinet indicates some traditional Chinese Shanshui (landscape) painting charm.

The cabinet adopts traditional sunmao (mortise and tenon joint) and is hand-crafted without painting. It exposes Swedish pine’s natural appearance features, e.g. the color and knots, which are in harmony with the Shanshui connotation.
