Emils Backe

"We also wanted to embrace and apply modern architecture and technology and place the eco-village in a new architectural context.”

“The Swedish Wood Award is a mark of quality for a project that was run on a small scale and with incredible engagement from the client in particular, but also from us.”

Just outside the centre of Trosa, almost 30 metres above sea level, rises Emils Backe, a wide and hilly landscape of forests and fields. Uninterrupted views take in the harbour and Tureholmsviken. The buildings on Emils Backe combine energy efficient homes in eco-friendly building materials with innovative architecture in harmony with nature. The buildings use a smart and inventive construction system that employs lightweight I-beams, combined with a strong external skeleton of glulam that minimises the occurrence of thermal bridges. Putting the houses on stilts allows the natural assets to be kept largely intact and makes it easy to build in difficult terrain.
