”We've learnt a great deal”

Jimi Leo, Head of sustainability, Derome.

Derome's Villa Klivet performed well in Rise's evaluation. Head of Sustainability Jimi Leo sees timber foundations as an interesting part of the future of construction – both for reducing climate impact and for creating more efficient building processes.

What are your comments on Rise's report and the results?

“We view the project and the results from Villa Klivet very positively. It has contributed to increased knowledge of alternative foundation methods and shows that there are opportunities to reduce the climate impact from a part of the building that often accounts for a significant share of emissions in single-family house construction.”

How have you taken the work forward?

“The experience from Villa Klivet has led us to proceed with timber foundations in a new housing project. There we have installed four timber foundations that will now be measured and monitored over time. One of the foundations was developed and manufactured by Derome, while the others are based on the same principle used in Villa Klivet.”

How do you see the future for timber foundations?

“We see great potential for timber foundations, not least because they can be prefabricated and installed quickly and efficiently. Using a renewable material in the foundation also delivers a clear climate benefit. Timber foundations are particularly well suited where ground conditions are good and buildings have a relatively simple form. At the same time, continued development and more reference projects are needed to broaden the range of applications.”
