Inspiration from the Dolomites

House Kostner in Castelrotto, Italy by Modus architects

FINDING FRESH, NEW inspiration requires surroundings filled with imagination and creativity. And it is exactly this that artist Hubert Kostner has acquired in the Italian mountain village of Castelrotto. Architectural practice Modus has created a spectacular house in the middle of the village, inspired by the mountain peaks of the Italian Dolomites.

The lower floor is a concrete module for the artist’s studio and exhibition space, with views of the valley below. The middle floor comprises large glazed windows, while the top floor accommodation is clad in larch.

The 600 square metre house took four years to build and was completed in 2013. There is a trend for increasingly modern buildings in the otherwise traditional Alps, according to the architects, who also feel that this building transforms a private dwelling into a landmark with spectacular effect.«
