Treated glulam

Long-lasting and effective rot protection can be achieved in certain specific situations by using treated glulam or glulam made from treated wood laminates. This cannot replace structural wood protection, but should be seen as a complement. Exposing a structure to moisture can cause problems other than rot.

The Swedish Chemicals Agency’s regulations govern the use of wood products treated with wood preservative. Wood for structures that require effective protection against wood-destroying organisms may be treated in wood preservation class NTR/A in the following situations:

  • in contact with the ground or (fresh)water
  • where personal safety requires the wood not to weaken
  • difficult to replace after encasing in a damp environment.

Glulam with laminates in wood preservation class NTR/A may thus be used in the above situations. Examples of outdoor structures in treated wood and glulam include verandas, balconies, exterior steps, bridges and jetties.
