Jury’s statement - Sara Kulturhus:
The mining community of Skellefteå is growing, with the population set to rise from 72,000 to 100,000 in just ten years. And Sara Kulturhus is the building to bring the community together. While the library and theatre beautifully enclose the city’s central square, the 20-storey high-rise hotel signals Skellefteå’s desire to be at the forefront of wood construction, not just in Sweden but globally. This lofty ambition reaches its artistic peak in the foyer which, with its almost entirely consistent use of materials, is one of the most striking rooms in contemporary Swedish architecture – a gilded hall for a more climate-friendly era.
