Jury’s statement - Kilströmskaj:

A rock in the Blekinge archipelago. Karlskrona harks back to the Age of Greatness with its many historic naval buildings and churches of high architectural and structural ambition. It is wonderful to see these three bold residential buildings that embody the present and the future in a combination of today’s industrial and yesterday’s traditional wood construction! Striking architecture in a place that sings.

Method of construction
The blocks have load-bearing frames, floors and roofs in CLT. Inside and out, the walls comprise: cedar shingles, plywood, battens, insulation, CLT and fireproof render.

Description
The blocks on Kilströmskaj could not have been built in any material other than wood. The light weight and high precision of CLT were vital in creating architecture where the roof and walls do the same job. The exposed wood in the communal areas enriches the spaces, not least the restaurant where the entire interior is based on wooden elements. Living at Kilströmskaj puts you in a world of wood, where the extraordinary wooden decking, laid out in different directions, gives a sense of being on a smooth rock in the Blekinge archipelago. The exterior wood also provides a connection with central Karlskrona and the World Heritage Site, which is what made it possible to get the project off the ground. The cedar shingles are stained and fireproofed.
