Modern brewery heals district

The Brewery in Stockholm, Sweden by Joliark

WHEN PHARMACEUTICALS COMPANY Octapharma needed larger premises, they opted for a brewery from the 1890s. The project was particularly sensitive since the brewery building Stora Bryggeriet in Hornsberg is listed due to its cultural and historical significance. Sympathetic renovations were therefore required. The structural frame of posts and beams is made from pine, some of which has been reinforced with new wood to increase the cross-section.

“We were able to avoid impregnation, which was of major importance architecturally. The new wood was painted for a colour match, so that today you can hardly tell what’s original and what has been added,” says Cornelia Thelander, architect at Joliark.«
