Tunet in Uppsala, Sweden by Kjellander Sjöberg

In the Tunet district of Sala Backe in Uppsala, Kjellander Sjöberg has won a land allocation competition for four apartment blocks in wood. With their rounded forms, flexible architecture and cross laminated timber (CLT) structure, they will create a sensuous and varied streetscape in the area.

The buildings are turned away from each other and they are precisely positioned to ensure good views from all the apartments – but also in response to the street and park, in order to create both public and more private spaces. The relationship to the neighbouring school has also been key to the design.

The Tunet development comprises 80 apartments and retail spaces spread across 9,800 square metres. It has practical layouts with a functional core, but with flexible outer sections and balconies that can easily be turned to different uses.
